MacGeek and I just spent the last hour figuring out how to make Internet Explorer 5.1 search Google from the address bar. Some of you may remember the hack for doing it in IE 5.0, which we decided we couldn't live without. You'll need some basic understanding of packages and a text editor. For those of you brave enough for this undertaking Dig Deeper.
Quit Internet Explorer (might want to print these out)
In the Finder navigate to /Applications and right click on Internet Explorer (Control-click for those of you with a 1 button mouse. Then go buy a real mouse when you're done.)
Choose Show Package Contents
Open Contents
Open Resources
Open English.lproj
Make a backup of Localized.rsrc (If you mess up the hack IE won't launch.)
Open Localized.rsrc in a text editor (BBEdit works great but make sure you don't have it set to save the state)
On line 42 replace http://home.microsoft.com/access/autosearch.asp?p=%s with http://supportmacslashnow@www.google.com/search?q=%s (You may also use http://binladenmustdienow@www.google.com/search?q=%s or your favorite 18 character string before the @. The entire string must be 52 characters.)
Save the file and relaunch Internet Explorer
Search Google from the address bar by typing ? searchterm
